Roots AND Journey

Liton Kar was born on February 18, 1974, in Chittagong, Bangladesh. He studied Drawing and Painting at the University of Chittagong, completing both his BFA and pre-Master’s degree. Early in his career, he wrote a newspaper column titled “Heritage of Chittagong,” documenting the city’s architectural heritage through words and pen-and-ink sketches. Deeply involved in theatre during his formative years, he developed a strong sense of space, character, and visual storytelling, which later became the foundation of his approach to both painting and film.

He founded the creative agencies “SHADE” and later “ITALIC”,  bringing together artists, designers, and filmmakers to explore new visual languages. Over the years, he has worked extensively as a screenwriter, production designer, and director within the Bangladeshi film industry. His alternative film posters have drawn critical attention, and as a mentor,he has guided many young talents in production design.

His debut short film, ICU (I See You), won multiple international awards, establishing him as a filmmaker with a poetic eye. In July 2025, he presented his first solo painting exhibition, SHE THE UNIVERSE-THE INFINITY WITHIN HER at Alliance Française de Dhaka. Featuring twenty-five large oil paintings, the exhibition explored women as carriers of infinite power and cosmic identity. Each evening included a screening of ICU and musical performances, linking painting and cinema into a unified narrative journey.

In 2018, he created a IDEA space “WIND BLOWS” combining art and food, hosting painting and photography exhibitions, film screenings, and theatre performances open to all. He now runs his art and film production house “Wind Stories”, in Dhaka. Across canvas, stage, and screen, Liton Kar continues to explore truth and the unseen poetry of life, building bridges between silence and sound, image and story, the earthly and the infinite.

Philosophy

For me, art is empathy and illumination, a way to connect reflection, nature, and human experience. My paintings and films blend surrealism and realism, exploring the feminine essence and the forces of global power politics, revealing quiet strength and resilience within silence.

Artist Statement

My art invites us to see the world as one shared home. Through painting, mixed media, and film, I explore the threads that connect humanity-our resilience, emotions, and shared experiences. Each work is a call to dissolve separation, awaken empathy, and celebrate our collective presence on this earth.
